For those that want to save part of the initial climb of the Gotthardpass Section II route, this alternative takes you to the lower station for the Funicolare Piotta-Ritom (Cogwheel Railway). This alternative route follows mostly the paved Highway 2 along the valley - expect a fair amount of vehicular traffic.

The cogwheel railway runs roughly every 40-45 minutes during the summer and climbs 785 m (2575 ft). In 2016, the price for an adult with mountain bike was CHF 24. Be advised that spaces for bikes may be limited.
