Description
This trail starts at the highest point 2226 m (7305 ft) in the
Portes du Soleil (Gateway to the Sun) circuit from the Mossettes - Suisse Cable Car upper station just below the Point des Mossettes summit (2277 m; 7470 ft). From the cable car upper station, a gravel forest road first winds its way counterclockwise almost entirely around the summit. It's not the true 360 view available from the summit (which is not accessible to bikes) but the effect is the same. The road descends sharply (215 m; 700 ft) in the first mile before leveling out. Take care in this section and make sure your brakes work well before you embark as I actually had to call a rescue helicopter for someone who had skidded on some loose gravel. It was all very efficient, but of course you are still on the Swiss side of the border at this point.
After the first mile the trail levels out, passing a small alpine lake before passing the Refuge de Chésery (mountain hut). Take a moment to enjoy the view and some refreshments if you haven't already. Shortly after the refuge, you'll pass back into France and the route becomes a gently descending singletrack for the following mile. When you do merge with another gravel forest road around 3 miles, the Portes du Soleil circuit continues straight along the road which takes you rapidly down to the lift base, restaurants, and parking above les Lindarets. If you've brought your downhill armour and/or have high confidence in your riding ability, you can instead take the downhill track at this point where the forest road becomes a singletrack which takes you to the same base area.
The
Portes du Soleil (Gateway to the Sun) circuit then continues following the
PdS: Les Lindarets to Morzine segment.
