Description
Section 6 of the AZT, Oracle Ridge Trail, should not being viewed as a mountain bike trail. This is a technical, challenging hiking trail.
This trail should not to be confused with CDO, another trail which is also referred to as the Arizona Trail. CDO is a fun, challenging, proper mountain bike trail. Oracle Ridge Trail is nothing like that.
The first eight miles of trail is singletrack. However, most of those eight miles are not rideable, even to very experienced and skilled mountain bikers. You'll spend approximately two hours carrying your bike through this section, only slightly less if you are highly skilled and on a very long travel bike.
All of that hiking is rewarded with about 15 miles of terrible gravel road, much of which is covered with baby head size rocks. There is absolutely no reason to attempt to ride this section of trail on a mountain bike.
If, however, you still feel the need to try to ride Section 6 of the AZT, know that it will not take three hours as the length and ride profile suggest. It will take more like six to eight hours. Be prepared for that length of outing. Your life could depend on it.
