There's a seasonal Bald Eagle Nesting Closure on the northwest end of Buckskin (traveling counterclockwise on the loop) from Hog Pen Trail to Cave Run Trail. The full closure is in effect from December 1 to July 1 and there's a narrower closure at all times/year round: it is illegal to approach/be within 200 yards of an Eagle nest, per the Bald Eagle Protection Act. The nest is not on the trail so outside of the seasonal closure as long as you do not go beyond the posted signs you are okay.
Description
Buckskin conjures different memories for different people. For many it's an old, mostly forgotten, classic that has fallen into obscurity through lack of maintenance. For many it was a first singletrack experience that left an impression.
It might be a little hard, but a decade ago it was the type of mountain biking experience that you expected when venturing into the woods on two wheels. Buckskin is singletrack journey through the forests with views out across Cave Run Lake. In places it' s hard and in places it's a dream.
Buckskin can easily be combined with other trails in the area to form loops and longer rides. The US Forest Service is working to develop a reroute near the Bald Eagle nesting site that will allow the trail to remain open year round.
