Description
The Six Mile Road does double duty as you'll reach the parking by driving along it for a short distance. Past the parking area, the primitive dirt road sees little vehicle traffic as it continues to the southwest though a guillemet limestone canyon.
Although most commonly ridden as part of the Pequop Penlopes loop, the road continues climbing and steepening. It reaches an elevation of near 9,000-feet where it tops off on South Pequop Mountain. Make sure you have a high-clearance 4x4 if you decided to drive up for a view, to look for the F-111 crash site, or to try and spot some wild horses.
At the bottom, the road starts in single leaf Pinyon Pine, Utah Juniper, and a few Rocky Mountain Juniper. It then picks up White Fir and Mountain Mahogany in the canyon itself. The understory consist of sage and rabbit brush with some bitterbrush, Utah serviceberry, and fern brush. Beautiful spring blooms include Indian paintbrush, lupines, spring beauties, hawksbeard, arrow leaf balsam root, penstemon, and larkspur.
