Overview

A fun, not too challenging loop, that offers flowy descents and an enjoyable singletrack climb at the Laguna Mountain Recreation Area.

Need to Know

  • Portions of Mount Laguna Recreation Area fall within U.S. Forest Service jurisdiction and require vehicles parked within its boundaries to display an Adventure Pass.
  • If you're looking to add some mileage, consider making a figure-eight loop by adding the Gatos Spur and returning on the Escondido Spur for the ride back down Redtail Roost Loop Spur - West.

Description

Redtailed Roost Loop Spur is a varying double and singletrack loop. If you take the trail counterclockwise (as mapped), the initial downhill on Redtail Roost Loop Spur - East has some great flow and contains opportunities for you to test your abilities on a number of log features. The singletrack end at the Escondido Ravine Road. Turn left to follow this doubletrack fire access road for less than a mile of easy descending down the Escondido Ravine.

At the intersection with the Escondido Spur keep left on the road until it reaches the Redtail Roost Loop Spur - West. Follow this singletrack south as it cuts up a ridgeline back to the trailhead at the Mt. Laguna School.

If you ride this in reverse (West Spur first), you'll enjoy stepped downhill flow until you reach Escondido Ravine Road. After that, you'll have an extended uphill ride via Redtail Roost Loop Spur - East as you grind yourself out of the ravine until you return back to the trailhead.

This ride is much better done clockwise. A more exciting and technical descend with a more gentle and entirely rideable ascent.
