Description

Snuffleupagus is the first singletrack trail in what will be a trail system that wraps its way around the Motts Run Reservoir. The entire reservoir recreation system is located off River Road in Fredericksburg, Va. The trailhead is marked by a kiosk about a hundred feet down the gravel access road from River Road on the right.

Once you start rolling, the trail winds tightly through trees coming to an intersection. While this trail is not directional, staying to the right is the recommended direction. The trail continues to be mostly flat through somewhat dense trees winding around, as it winds closer back towards to River Road. The trees will thin out some as you get closer to the road, and the trail is still mostly flat with no climbs and intermittently some loose rocks.

The trail will intersect with an underground utility right-of-way access road. This is a good point to use as a turnaround for young riders. If you turn left down the access road, you'll quickly rejoin the return side of the trail on the left. If you continue straight, the trail remains mostly flat and winds through the trees.

You'll come to another intersection with an access road which again provides a turnaround point, just go left down the access road, and the return part of the loop will be on the left again. Continuing straight across the access road, the trail narrows as it goes through thick foliage. The trail will begin to get rockier and more undulated with quick, rolling downhill grades and quick, easy climbs. This part of the trail will continue in this fashion to the next intersection to the right, where the Mott's Extension Trail begins.

Continuing straight, the trail rolls downhill through some loose, chunky sections quickly to a small bridge. The trail winds back and forth up a gradual slope of loose gravel in spots. Then a couple of quick downhills one with a small drop just before a hard left turn then a banked hard right turn. You'll come to the access road once again, after this point the trail is once again mostly flat and winds back and forth through the trees. Once you have crossed the second access road, the trail will wind back to the start of the trail through dense trees and brush. When you intersect the trail, you make a right to exit the trail out onto the dirt access road you began on.
