Description

Get ready for a fun track with little elevation gain, numerous roots, tricky creek crossings, and narrow sections through manuka forest. Sidewinder is usually traveled east-west as it takes more effort to go west-east.

The start of the trail is signposted a short distance up Kaka Track from there it twists and turns through beech forest, dips through a small creek, and emerges in grassy clearings. More manuka forest leads to more rooty beech forest and a couple of creek crossings.

Soon after passing the exit to Flying Moa Track, the track descends steeply through manukas and emerges on grassy flats. A sign here points the way left to the mid-point of Rattler Rim Trail. Sidewinder Trail continues straight ahead across the grass punctuated with small matagouri scrub. The trail ends at Jasmine Road. Turn right up the road to access the Big Bush Track, or left then right onto Teetotal Road to reach the west end of Rattler Rim Trail.
