This is a high traffic area during the summer for horses and lightly traveled by 4x4 vehicles.

Description

Scales Road is a rocky 4x4 road from Fairwood Road in Grayson County up to the Scales area of Mount Rogers Recreation Area. It is the only access via bicycle to the high country, other than Grayson Highlands State Park and it is the only access open year round.

The trail/road follows the old route of a railroad logging grade. But, this is no rails-to-trails as there are several moderate rock gardens and grades approaching 10% in places. It is a continuous rocky climb of over 1,300 ft to the top but well worth the trip.
