Overview
The Orcutt area trail system is the best place for a trail ride in the Santa Maria Valley. It is close to town, well-built, and provides a great workout for all levels. Combine this loop with a swing through the
Orcutt East Main Loop and you can have yourself a nice after work ride.
Need to Know
Watch for runners, hikers, and dog walkers.
Description
This ride starts off on
Valley View. It's a well-built and really fun short loop. There are some sandy corners to watch out for on the ride, but none of them should stop you in your tracks. You'll encounter some fun and well-built switchbacks first thing when you climb up the west side of the park, and again when you descend off that mesa.
Once you reach the water tanks, you'll be ready for the final descent. Look for the bench and head north into the trees. This descent follows the
Proposed Trail, but I assure you it has been in use for years. The final descent from the water tanks down the ridge is rocky and steep in a few places, but all obstacles can easily be avoided.
This place handles rain very well due to the sandy soil. It is a great place to go when many other trails may be muddy. Conversely, when dry, you might want to bleed a little more air than usual out of your tires to give you extra traction in the soft stuff.
This is only one of the more obvious rides in the area. On your first ride, you'll quickly realize the maze-like nature of this area and see that many 'Choose Your Own Adventure' options exist.
