Canaan Mountain/Blackwater Canyon Mixed Terrain Ride

This is a big dirt tour on mixed terrain: pavement, gravel, grassy forest roads, and old railroad grades. Expect beautiful scenery on a nice fitness loop. There are lots of singletrack additions or substitutions that can be incorporated into this loop if you already know your way around.

Start in Davis, WV and head east (past the Shop and Save) on Camp 70 Road (dirt). At the end, cross the trail bridge across the Blackwater River. Continue past the Shady Hollow Trail and climb up Canaan Mountain Trail/Haul Road. After a closed gate, you'll come to a major power line. Turn left and climb up it.

At the next gravel road that crosses it, you can go just 150 ft past to a nice viewpoint. Here, the route turns right on that gravel road. Turn left onto Canaan Heights Road and cross Rt 32 to continue straight on Canaan Loop Road (FS13).

After ~5-6 miles, turn left onto FR-244A and descend off the mountain. At the end, turn right on Rt 72 (pavement) towards Hendricks. In Hendricks, turn right towards City Hall at the intersection with the paved and gated Allegheny Highlands Trail. Follow this along the Blackwater River on the Blackwater Canyon Rail Trail towards Thomas. In Thomas, turn right on Rt 32 and follow it back to Davis.
