Overview
A fairly difficult trail system composed of both hike and bike routes. The red arrows are meant for bikes and green for hikers. The red arrows are generally easier climbs. If you are looking for more of a challenge, ride the green arrow routes. There are a few very steep sections that are rocky and rooty, which are very taxing and take some calories.
Need to Know
There is a convenience store at Rock Creek Resort when you reach the end that will allow you to refill water and buy snacks for your trek back to the start. Cell phone service is spotty and rescue is a long ways a way. Use caution, be prepared, and try not to ride alone.
The trail has sections that go unmaintained for periods of time, so don't be surprised if you come across downed trees or high grass.
Description
The trail starts fairly mellow with a few root sections to let you know what you are in for. As you go deeper into the trail, you'll start to notice more chunky downhills and tech climbs. When you see green and red arrows, you can pick whether you want to go the hard, challenging way, or the easy, still challenging way. You'll pass through several campsites, so just look for blazes on the trees to pick the trail back up.
Once you peak out and start on some fairly flat singletrack, you'll see a sign for Eagle's Roost with a bunch of cool trail signs; hang left to hit Fern Grotto, a super gnarly rock chute that will feed you in to a switchback trail called Stairway to Heaven. Follow this all the way until you hit doubletrack. Ride the doubletrack down a fun, fast hill and cross and old metal bridge.
Start your climb back up the hill and look right to pick back up on the singletrack. There is signage. Continue on, and after several creek crossings, you'll end up on black top which will lead you to the Rock Creek convenience store. You can refill your water and calories and begin your trek back.
