Trails are closed to bicycle and equestrian use December 15th - April 15th.
Need to Know
This trail is primarily an equestrian trail though it is also open to mountain biking and hiking. Please expect and be respectful of other users. After the ride, the B & J service station in Newport has a decent selection of beer. Just down the road is The Jug dairy bar along the Ohio River offering ice cream and all the deep fried food you could dream of or just across the bridge in St. Marys, WV Station Pizza delivers up some killer pies!
Description
The Campfire Trail extends from Kinderhook Cemetery, traversing a high ridge with gentle rolling terrain eventually connecting with the
Paw Paw Trail that descends to the lower portion of the
Kinderhook Short Loop. The
Kinderhook Short Loop will connect you to the main Kinderhook Trailhead located on Dana's Run Rd.
When nearing the end of the Campfire Trail, you'll see an intersection for the
Paw Paw Trail on your left. If you continue past it, the Campfire Trail terminates into the
Paw Paw Trail shortly after, creating the opportunity to make a loop and head back toward Kinderhook Cemetery without doing any major climbing or descending. This makes an easy beginner/intermediate loop option in the Wayne that doesn't require a ton of climbing.
You can pick up a couple extra miles by also riding the
Council Trail, which is accessed from Kinderhook Cemetery. The trail has a gravel base and holds up fairly well in damp conditions.
