Overview
Just outside of Leavenworth, this loop offers fantastic views of Leavenworth and the surrounding mountains, plus a flowy descent that will have you wanting a second lap. Much more fun than doing the chicken dance or fighting the crowds in town.
Description
From the gate on FS Road 7702, begin climbing up the road. You'll be on the doubletrack for a while, then get to a turn-around where the Freund Canyon #701 singletrack trail begins to the left.
The builders (I believe mostly Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance) have done a fantastic job with the grade. Expect the climb to take 40 minutes to an hour, depending on how hard you want to push. There are a few short steep sections and some fantastic views.
You'll eventually reach a saddle. There is a trail that comes down steeply on your right then continues onto the ridge on your left. That is the Ribbed Trail which is a technical downhill. For Fruend, bear right on what looks like a road, but quickly becomes singletrack. After a short bit of fun descending is a fork. Rosy Boa is to your right. Fruend is left.
Fruend contours the side of the hill, zig-zagging high up the side of the hill, then around a berm seemingly dangling from the canyon edge, over and over again in a thrilling pattern of fun, only broken occasionally by a tabletop jump here and there.
Eventually, the trail meets 'For the Boys' coming from Leavenworth Ski Hill and Rosy Boa. Go left and keep descending around an epic berm and more zig-zagging. Towards the bottom are a couple creek crossings. Watch your speed so you don't case it on the opposite side of the creek.
