Need to Know

FR 437 is naturally divided into two sides, the north and the south sections, each providing access to the South Boundary Trail #164 from different locations. It's also used for various long-day and multi-day routes that utilize the extensive trail and forest road system in this area. The entire road is rideable, most of it is driveable for low clearance 4WD vehicles. Several dispersed campsites can be found along either side.

Description

This is the main road to access the South Boundary Trail at Garcia Park. From the north on Highway 64 about 13 miles east of Taos, turn onto Valle Escondido Road and look for 437 a quarter mile up on the right; it's 7 miles to the high point along a rocky, curvy road.

From the south side of Taos turn onto Highway 518 and continue 2.1 miles through Talpa, look for 437 on the left. The road climbs through a neighborhood then follows the Rio Chiquito another 11 miles. It crosses the stream a few times on old wooden bridges, then the elevation gain becomes apparent as the road meanders through some rolling meadows and wetlands.

After you pass a junction with FR 478, turn left at a junction with FR 437 CG. The road steepens after it enters another canyon and climbs to Garcia Park.
