This forest road starts at the Rifugio le Banditelle (mountain hut). The first km (0.6 mi) is a pretty brutal 20% climb. After that, the trail levels off before resuming the climb at a more reasonable rate. The first half of the route, including the brutal initial climb, has good forest cover, so at least you can count on some shade.
After that, you've earned a nice easy ride above the tree line to the Rifugio Stazzi. At the 2.6-mile mark, the trail merges with the road to the observatory on the summit in a hairpin. Continue straight (right and slightly downhill) to get to the Rifugio Stazzi.
