Description
Climbing steeply from the intersection with the
Ruby Jewel Trail, Hidden Valley switchbacks its way up to the Ruby Jewel saddle. Here, you'll be granted a temporary reprieve from all the steep climbing and begin a raucous descent down into Hidden Valley. This descent is rowdy, and tricky. It may feel awkward at times with large rocks in weird places and off-camber turns on steep hillsides. Oh, and did I mention steep?
Once down in the valley floor, the trail alternates between really hard to ride and not hard to ride. There are moments of singletrack bliss as you cruise at elevation next to an alpine stream without a care in the world. Next thing you know, you are required to negotiate an impossible boulder field. There are more steep inclines ahead, of course, as you work your way toward the saddle between Hidden Valley and Kelly Lake.
Just before the final push to the summit of the saddle, the trail actually turns slightly downhill even as it becomes quite narrow and clings to the side of a steep mountain. Then the final ascent to the saddle is steep and rocky, but more rideable than a lot of what you've already come through to get to this point.
Get to the saddle and enjoy that view. You've earned it! Amazing views in both directions!
Looming just ahead of you, and slightly to the right, is the trail which now traverses another very large boulder/scree field. As much as you may want to just bomb down to the lake below, it may be advised to hike-a-bike just a bit further until you cross the boulder field. Once past that, bomb away to your heart's content! It's a steep ride down to the lake after the boulder field, but it should all be rideable.
