Description

This active county road crosses the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, connecting the high desert mesas above the Rio Grande between US HWY 64 (northwest of the gorge bridge) and NM State Road 522 in Arroyo Hondo, with a scenic drop into the gorge in the middle.

Most of the road is dirt and if you continue to the far east side the last couple miles are paved. You can park by at a trailhead just off of HWY 64 or drive several miles in to a junction with the Ruta de Tres Cerros route that heads north along the west rim of the gorge towards Cerro Chiflo and the Miner's Trail (steep and rocky - hiking trail not recommended for bikes).

From that junction the road drops into the gorge and makes a couple switchbacks, one with a trail access to the BlackRoack hot springs, and continues down to the river and the John Dunn Bridge where you'll find copious opportunities to hike, climb, fish, swim - this is also a popular boat launching spot with adequate parking if you're coming from the east side.

Across the river the road continues alongside then climbing up from the Rio Hondo, leaves BLM land and makes a switchback onto a mesa above Arroyo Hondo. Unless you're looking for mileage the riding is just road/gravel from that point, otherwise it isn't very appealing. There's a lot of open space and public land to explore from this route, please be courteous of private property and residences scattered across the area west of the gorge.
