USFS gravel road - gated in winter at bottom, permanent gate at 5,000 ft. entrance to Big Balds.

Need to Know

In the winter, Moses Creek and then Big Bald Road are gated but still legal for bikes. So is the BRP up above -- this means that by the time you are at or near the top of this climb, you'll be as deep in the high elevation (above 5,000 ft.) backcountry as you can get in WNC and should prepare accordingly with extra clothing, tools, food, lights, company, and a logged itinerary.

Description

Access this road off of Moses Creek Road, another gravel USFS road that is also gated in the winter.

This is great for cross bikes or hard tails - at top of legal (USFS gravel/logging road climb), it terminates at the Mountains to the Sea (MTS) Trail which must be walked (no biking from there on) but travels on up a ridge top to the Blue Ridge Parkway.
