Need to Know
Fee to enter the State Recreation area, IN DNR mountain bike permit is required.
Description
This trail is shared with horse riders. Most of it is a gravelly base, at least 10' wide in most places. This trail can be enjoyable when it's mostly dry (or frozen solid), as there are a few places where horse prints make mud bogs. Use caution and courtesy around horse riders or go when they aren't likely to be there.
There are also a few steep grades that can't be ridden up unless you're an incredibly skilled and strong climber, and could be a bit much for a beginner to descend.
It is not completely intuitive to follow, so take a map (or the
MTB Project mobile app) and/or expect to spend a little time on wrong turns. I'd suggest taking along a Clark State Forest / Deam Lake detailed trail map. The DNR's online version linked
here does not show quite enough detail.
There are several trail intersections that are not marked clearly on which trail is the bike-legal trail, but in nearly all intersections you'll make turns to the left if going counterclockwise (right if going clockwise), avoiding the Knobstone Trail (hiking-only).
Three access points are: 1) just outside the park gate house (obvious road crossing), 2) on the east side of the campground, 3) behind the property office on the west side of the lake.
