Description
There is free parking at Lopez Canyon Park. Overall it has a seldom-ridden feel with great views of the San Fernando Valley to the south and the Angeles National Forest to the north and east. While most of the trail is fire road, some of it feels like double or even singletrack since it is rarely driven. Even in the winter the road gets pretty full sun, so bring lots of water. The downhill is ripping, with lots of twists, and ends with a great singletrack that'll have you wishing it was longer.
The trail starts with about 0.4 mi of singletrack, followed by another mile of climbing up a generally well maintained fire road up to some kind of cement construct - I call it the UFO. From here it's another 2 miles of mostly moderate uphill to the intersection with Kagel Mt. Road, which is the peak of this particular trail. You have two options here:
Option 1: Continue straight and proceed on the northern, now downhill leg of the Kagel Canyon Rd. (I did not take this section and can't comment on it's quality).
Option 2: Make a hard left and link into
Kagel Mountain Road. This is a 1.6 mile out-and-back fire road up a series of short but hard climbs. The summit is a paraglider/hang-glider launch.
