Description
Starting from the D2566 provincial road, just west of Sospel, this forest road is a relaxing but consistent 6% climb up to the Col de Braus pass (1002 m; 3287 ft). After the 1st km (0.6 mi), the dirt road enters a dense, quiet forest and you could be 1000 miles from nowhere. There are about 20 switchbacks along the way to keep the grade manageable and then, just at the pass, it levels off for a bit.
The pass features the crumbling ruins of a former border post on the old Franco-Italian border. The "new" border dating from post World War II is about 8 km (5 mi) to the east.
The pass connects with the GR510 long distance route. Heading south (across the D2204 road which passes through the pass) the
GR510: Col de Braus to Sospel will take you back to Sospel. Or consider following the
Tour du Farguet loop.
