Overview
A steep fire road climb that leads you to Gaviota Peak, then fun singletrack for the descent - with excellent views of the Gaviota Coast throughout.
Need to Know
Free parking along the entrance road before you get in the main lot, otherwise it's $5 (self-pay).
Description
Right when you leave the main parking lot, the climb on
Gaviota Peak Fire Road begins. It is pretty steep the entire way up. The road has several switchbacks and will meander up until you reach a pass, with a great view of the ocean. On your right will be
Trespass Trail (singletrack), which steeply rises to the final summit of Gaviota Peak.
Once you reach the summit, continue downhill on Trespass. At the beginning of the DH, you'll experience loose rock sections and it will be moderately steep. Eventually, you'll descend to a meadow, and the rest of the trail is fast and flowy through oak trees and chaparral. Once Trespass turns to doubletrack, keep an eye out for the
Tunnel View Trail on your left, which is a fun singletrack alternative that winds through beautiful woods and provides a view of the tunnel on Highway 101.
The
Tunnel View Trail leads you to the same spot as where the
Trespass Trail goes, so it's worth doing if you have the time/energy. Once you get back on Trespass, keep heading downhill and you'll re-connect with the
Gaviota Peak Fire Road. Take a left back to the parking lot.
