Overview
When riders come to Gunnison, they usually only think of Hartman Rocks or the trails in Crested Butte. Certainly, this ride is not a replacement for those areas, but it is fun to explore and may provide more solitude.
Throughout the majority of the ride, you have great views in all directions. None of the trails are technically difficult but offer a nice mix of singletrack, doubletrack, and flow trails.
Chicken Wing and
Rasta provide the best flow trails. There are plenty of options to ride other various loops in this area.
Need to Know
Plenty of parking at the start. No restrooms or water at the start.
Description
Climb up the doubletrack
Ridgeline Trail over somewhat loose rock/soil with easy to moderate inclines, passing by the
Rasta Trail first, then passing
Chicken Wing. Both trails are on the right. Take
Shoelace for a winding climb on singletrack that tops out at a saddle. Continue left onto
Northwoods Trail as there is a mix of ups and downs with some short steep sections. There's a mix of open singletrack in the sage and singletrack in the pines.
Climb to the top of
Northwoods Trail and hit the high point with great views in all directions. Take the short doubletrack left and turn right on
Powerline Road #3108 for a short downhill stretch until you see a road heading back north through a gate in the fence. Take this north until you see an old white piece of metal on the left with faint singletrack. This is the start of
Music Rocks, which is a winding trail, often over loose shale, and tight singletrack with some faster flow sections. This meets the
South Rim Trail which takes you back to the
Ridgeline Trail with a short but stiff climb at the end.
Take a left on
Ridgeline Trail and climb the doubletrack to reach Signal Peak. Continue to the saddle with the junction of
Northwoods Trail and
Shoelace, and take either
Ridgeline Trail or
Shoelace to get back to the start pf
Chicken Wing.
Chicken Wing is fast and sometime loose singletrack down to the
Contour Trail. Take a right on
Old Car singletrack back up to
Ridgeline Trail, and climb back to
Rasta.
Rasta down is fast flow track through the sage brush back to the
Contour Trail. Head right to get back to the trailhead via the shortest route. Head left to link up with the winding Contour Connector and the lower Cemetery Trail which is a smooth dirt road without any interesting riding, but is a gentle grade, and has some nice views, back to trailhead.
