The canal banks away from traffic. No issues with dogs, but watch out for goat heads in some places to avoid flats. Watch where the canal goes -- there are some canal changes (at least three) and quite a few road crossings, including Highway 165 twice.

The trail can be cut short at many locations along the way and you can return on road. Depending on the way you go, the canal ends on Williams Avenue and Tegner Road and you have to ride the side of the road to go from Stevenson Lower Lateral to Lateral Number Seven.
