Starts at the beginning of 403 right off of Highway 193, 3.5 miles south of Alpine. If you're starting at Alpine, the highway is not too busy but there's no shoulder. This adds about 550 ft of road climbing. Forest Road #403 is a long, non-technical, gravel road that loops around back to Alpine. The views are amazing even after the fire of 2013.
