A short (1.5 miles) beginner/intermediate friendly trail.
Closed in Winter
Overview
Trails have been improving this year at the Grand Lake Golf Course. The
Moose Meander Bike Loop is a new, beginner/intermediate trail that wanders through forests and around a number of ponds. There are a number of other trails in the network ranging from easy doubletrack, beginner/intermediate flow lines to technical rocky climbs.
Need to Know
Trails are free. Many trails are mixed use so look ahead and watch for hikers and dogs. Moose love this area so be safe. DO NOT APPROACH MOOSE! After the ride, get and drink or something to eat at the golf course's Sly Fox Restaurant.
Description
From the trailhead parking, follow the
River Trail for a short distance. As you connect with a dirt road, look to the pond to the left to see if moose are around (always watch for moose on the trails--they are sneaky). Take this dirt road right and downhill until signs for
River Trail. Take this singletrack to the left.
After a short distance, signs indicate that hikers go right and bikes go left. Take the left trail for an easy climb. Near the top of the small ridge, the true loop begins. I prefer riding the loop clockwise but counterclockwise is fine. After going up and down some small hills, the trail descends through a pair of bermed turns. At the bottom of the hill, the trail becomes more flat and meanders through a logged section of forest.
The trail will again split to allow hikers to go left and bikes to go right. After this split, the trail returns to the forest for some turns and a berm or two. Continue to follow the bike signs. After a somewhat large roller, a climb begins on a dirt road section. Once the road levels out, follow the signs to the right to turn off the dirt road and rejoin a mixed use trail.
The trail wanders through the trees and back to a logged section and finally rejoins the start of the loop. Turn left and go downhill to head back along to trail to the trailhead or explore other trails.
History & Background
In the past, mountain biking at the Grand Lake Golf Course Trails (aka Grand Lake Metro Rec District) was technical and good for advanced riders. Over the past year, changes and new trails have been made to make trails enjoyable for beginning and intermediate riders.
