Description
The trail is wide and maintained by the county and some hunters. It's a great ride with nice pleasant view, with a nice break from the Hilo humidity and heat.
Riding from Saddle, you can enjoy a gentle overall downgrade but still have technical climbs. If you bike from Saddle, it will be drier and rockier. If you bike from Stainback, it will be wetter and muddier, though the mud isn't anything too challenging.
Both ends of the trail have county signs with information and a map, but no check-in stations.
The uphill entrance is just beyond the 16 mile marker on Saddle Road from Hilo (and marked with a yellow sign). The downhill exit is about 10.5 miles up Stainback Highway (the road that goes past the Panaewa Zoo) from Highway 11.
