Mountain bike riding is usually permitted on any public trail in France (do check for local exceptions). These trails are best found using the French IGN 1:25,000 map series TOP RANDO.

This is a great ride even when the lifts aren't running in Chamonix (spring and autumn in particular). Take the train from Chamonix to Buet and then drop the length of the valley back down.

There is a mixture of difficulty along the way including some technical descents, and easy flat doubletrack. There is also a long climb from Argentiere along the Petit Balcon Nord. The views are breathtaking. You can extend the ride to Les Houches, but the trails below Cham are less interesting.
