Overview
The
Riverside Trail is a lovely, flat, well-packed trail along the Rouge River and into a forested area. It can be turned into a loop by following the
Kroger Trail which is less well-maintained and includes several downed trees that must be climbed over and some log obstacles that have fallen into disrepair. Still a beautiful short loop with lots of wildlife and river views.
Need to Know
The trail can be accessed on the west side from the shopping center parking lot off of Garrison Place. To the east, enter from S. Military on the south side of the river. On that side there is no parking and the trail is not well marked. On the other side of Military, you can connect to the Parkway Trail to go into Ford Field/Cherry Hill Park and on to the
Rouge River Gateway Trail.
Description
This is a mixed use path with some maintenance and a few features that are in some disrepair, especially on the
Kroger Trail. It's almost entirely flat and good sections of it run along the river and through forested park which makes for a lovely nature experience. Lots of deer and other wildlife to be seen.
From S. Military, the path can be a little tricky to see as it starts in some grass alongside a building, but follow it through to a slight slope down into the forested parkland. It's even harder to find behind the shopping center, but a couple path heads will be visible—just don't take the one marked "wrong way." The proper path is a few feet to the left of that sign. That entrance has a steep slope and a couple sharp turns but from there it flattens out.
