Overview
Another loop from the old Socorro Fat Tire Society page. This steep climb leads to high singletrack riding. This can be done as an out-and-back or be adventurous and head down Jordan Canyon.
Need to Know
The trails in the Magdalenas can be filled with sharp rocks at times. Due to the remote nature of this ride, use burly tires and bring lots of water and repair items.
Description
Heading toward Magdalena from Socorro, drive up the Water Canyon accessing the Magdalena Mountains and park where the main road intersects with FS Rd 505. Head up Water Canyon past the USFS campground staying on FS Rd 235.
Crank up the road and top out just below South Baldy. You can take the
North Baldy Trail #8 before your top out, follow the road up to the Observatory, or go to the lookout at the summit of South Baldy.
Finally, head north on the
North Baldy Trail #8 and follow it to N Baldy proper. Pick up
FS Rd 505E and follow it downhill through the forest to
FS Rd 505A. When 505A hits 505, take a right and return to your vehicle.
History & Background
The Water Canyon hill climb was part of the Tour de Socorro for about ten years, ending in 2012. From the
Tour of Socorro website, "For racers seeking a good climb, the South Baldy Hill Climb offers an approximately 8-mile course that ascends nearly 4,000 feet. The road is a smooth, dirt Forest Service road from Water Canyon Campground to 10,700' South Baldy Peak in the Magdalena Range, West of Socorro. For those who've been around for a while, we used to hold this race as part of the Socorro Fat Tire Fiesta."
