Need to Know

There is a lot of traffic on Rt. 29/Colesville Rd. so if the intention is to access the Northwest Branch Trail to the north, it is best to go to the nearest crosswalk.

Description

New, fun singletrack that bypasses the section of the Rachel Carson Greenway Trail that parallels the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia.

Trail intersections are marked with really nice 6x6 posts. There are a couple of sections that use the old trail, which can be busy with pedestrian traffic, so be alert for walking daydreamers.

If approaching from the south side paved trail moving north, the pavement ends with hiker only boulders trail continuing along the river. To the right there is a gravel path up to a residential area. Start up this path and watch on the right for the marked start of the dirt trail.

Moving north from the end of the paved trail, this is the first of the lung-busting, glutes-testing climbs on NW Branch and the optional Copperhead (high ground) route. This one has no stream crossing at the start so you can get momentum and charge up.
