Great trail for kids and those new to mountain biking. Several trail features, but all avoidable for first-timers. Short loop to build confidence and repeat. You want them to love it, right?
One Way Only: This is designated as a directional trail.
Need to Know
The trail system is accessed via the paved Glacial River Trail that runs from Janesville to Jefferson and is just south east of the Highway 26 and County Road W overpass. Parking is available just to the north along County W next to the Jefferson County Highway Department Depot. No trail or parking pass required.
Note that the short-staffed county parks department doesn't always come out to close the trail if conditions are poor. Please stay off the trail after rains or while the trail is still damp.
Description
This is the easy, beginner trail in the new Glacial River Mountain Bike Trails. It's a great mix of quick turns, smaller features, and flowing sections. Do a couple of loops for a warm up and get the blood flowing, or bring a new friend and show them how much fun mountain biking can be.
The trail starts at the edge of the paved Glacial River Bike Trail where you'll find a signage and a bike repair stand. Have a glance at the map before you head up the one-way trail through the hardwoods of this county pocket park. After taking a couple of tight turns and climbing, you'll weave northward parallel to the ridge dodging trees, roots, and small rock piles. Note that you'll pass the entrance to the intermediate (Blue) trail along the path. After about 0.4 miles, you'll cross over the ridge and weave back south on a nice flowing trail with a couple of small jumps. You can shorten the loop near the end of the ridge and return to the start or take a hard right to add another half mile though more hardwoods and a partially restored prairie. This section has a new table top feature and a nice boulder pile to try as you gain confidence (both can be avoided). Sprint back to the finish to complete the loop and prepare for the next round.
Volunteers from the Jefferson County Bicycle Club in cooperation with the Jefferson County Parks Department developed and maintain this trail system.
