Overview

Solid fun loop on well-groomed trails, through mostly rolling and downhill terrain, with an easy climb out on a nice road.

Need to Know

You may encounter free range cattle on the lower part of the Black Pine portion of the trail.

Description

From the trailhead, the route first follows the easy and rolling Ridge Trail #646 for 2.2 miles. It then turns left and drops off the ridge to the south following the Black Pine Trail #647 for 2.4 miles through beautiful ancient aspen groves and pine forest to 18 Road, where a mostly gentle climb returns you to the trailhead. Views looking south to the Black Pine Reservoir and into Unaweep Canyon await.

History & Background

The Ridge Trail used to be an old jeep road connecting 16 1/2 Road and 18 Road.

Flatter area after the descent. Fun singletrack riding through aspen forest with occasional small rocks to ramp off.

More mud holes. This ones too deep to go through. Most of the trail is pretty dry except for a few spots like this.

There are still plenty of mud holes to contend with in the middle of summer!
