Trail pass is required to access trails. You can obtain a trail pass on Westernslopetrails.org. The Western Slope is closed to all trail use EXCEPT approved hunting from November 1 to January 15. Bicycle trail use is permitted after sunset and on Sundays during this period.

Overview

In this imaginative lower Western Slope Loop, riders will climb less than most other loop rides on the Western Slope Trails and the course highlights many of the amazing trails built by the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition over the past years.

Description

From the hill above Hensley's pond, drop into the woods and take the Cow trail through a rough but short patch down to cross Cub Run for the first of several creek crossings. Careful with this initial crossing, it is the most challenging. After crossing the Cub Run, take The Pines trail over to Blooming Laurel trail where you'll traverse a small ravine and have a short but steep climb up to the Lower Hanenkahm trail.

At the top, you'll cross over Lower Hanenkahm and take Quarantine downhill to the Chimney trail where you'll have another creek crossing after a short jog across a dirt road. As you climb up to Red Bud Ridge you'll find yourself at one of the most confusing intersections and make a right turn to take Smoke Tree Lane up to Lower Hanenkahm.

After a short but steep climb up Lower Hanenkahm, you'll descend the Stash Trail to Old Barn Connector where you'll then turn onto Creekside trail. At the far end of Creekside, you'll again cross Cub Run. When exiting Creekside you'll find yourself lined up to continue on the Short Track which will take you out to the pavilion where you'll then enter the woods to pick up VA '54 and once again cross Cub Run.

At the top of VA '54, take Boundary trail all the way back up to the Pond.
