Nice, easy, wide, flat trail. Many sections are suitable for small children.
Need to Know
There is ample, legal street parking in the surrounding neighborhoods, but watch the street signs... there are no-parking days/times for street sweeping. No water or restrooms along the way. There are restrooms and drinking fountains at the California Citrus State Historic Park Visitor Center.
Description
Easy, flat ride From Arlington Ave to the California Citrus State Historic Park and back that parallels the Historic Gage Canal. You'll pass through residential areas, orange groves, nurseries, and see some farm animals along the way. There are shady areas depending on the time of day.
This is a popular pedestrian trail, so be polite and use your bell! Near the end of the trail, you can turn back at Jackson St., or go past the holding pond and drop down into the California Citrus State Historic Park.
There are several quiet residential street crossings along the route. The crossing at Washington St. has fairly heavy traffic, is uncontrolled, and might feel a little sketchy. You definitely need to keep your eyes open when crossing. If you don't feel safe crossing Washington at the canal, you can ride about a .25 of a mile south to a controlled crossing at Overlook Parkway... probably not a bad idea if you're riding with kids.
The only non-flat parts of this ride are a fair-sized ravine near Maude St., a small ravine between Jefferson St. and Saint Lawrence St., and getting into the citrus park at the end. The Maude St. ravine is steep and may be a walker for some. When you cross the two ravines, notice the canal siphons that take the water from one side to the other.
If you are looking for a technical MTB ride, don't waste your time here. If you would like a pleasant ride through a hidden part of Riverside, give it a whirl!
