Description
IMO, one of the most fun trails in the Rock Hawk trail system. Start as shown from the
Orange Trail. The trail was designed to go in this direction, and simply doesn't have the fun factor going the other way.
Drop in from the Orange, and follow the swoopy singletrack up and down until you get to the first steep roll into the right-hand turn. Drop your post (and your brakes) and bomb down until you get to the end of the downhill.
Follow the trail until you pop out onto the granite outcropping and follow the arrows down the janky downhill section until you get to the lakeshore. Take a minute to take in the vistas of Lake Oconee, or take a swim, there's a dock just adjacent to the granite.
Follow the arrows and meander around until you pop out on the road leading into the campground. From here, you can ride through the campground and rejoin the
Orange Trail, or cross the road and enter the "Granite Shack" trail. This will take you to the
Hawk's Head.
The McLean Trail is old-school hand-cut singletrack, but with some really good flow. I only wish it were longer. If you come to Rock Hawk trails, this is a must-do.
