Additional parking at the Montano Rd trailhead can be found at the Bosque School just down the road or even on the road. Boxing Bear Brewery is easily accessible at the north end of this trail and La Cumbre Brewery is available at the south end.
Description
This trail can be ridden in either direction and linked up with the other Albuquerque Bosque trails to form a much longer river ride.
The trail outlined here has many spidering branches, most of which are too sandy for any non-fatbike. This exact route maximizes singletrack and minimizes exposure to deep/unridable sand.
The route starts in the Montano Rd access parking lot and parallels Montano Rd in the dirt trails below the overpass. It then crosses under Montano Rd via a small wooden bridge and heads north staying close to the river for as long as possible.
The trail narrows and passes under some old metal cable/jetties which are beached on the trail. Eventually, this narrow singletrack ends in a wider, sandier doubletrack. At this point, it's time to take the next fork west (left) into the cover of the trees. Look for another fork north (right) and follow it watching for small branch-offs to the right which avoid some of the sandier sections. Eventually, the trail merges to the left and up to the main walking trail (doubletrack) crossing a land bridge.
Immediately after this, turn right back into the bosque. Follow this trail through some sandy sections and continue to a sign for an optional short loop. The main trail heads north (left) again along the river. From this point, BE SURE to stay right at all forks watching for a 12'+ tall sculpture made out of trees that looks like a teepee which should be on your left.
Follow this section north ignoring all left turns. Eventually, it will dead-end at an abrupt left, follow this trail crossing over some sandy doubletrack. Take the next right in the woods again and follow the wooded trail north passing under the Paseo del Norte Blvd overpass.
Immediately after the overpass, turn left and get up on the hard-packed doubletrack ignoring the Bosque Trail; this entire section of bosque is deep sand. Follow the doubletrack all the way to a fence with a cut through for non-motorized vehicles and turn right on the dirt road directly after. Cross into the VERY DEEP SANDY arroyo to the north and head up the ramp on the other side.
Take a right onto the trails making sure to take the trail that is deeper into the woods. Follow this hardpack singletrack north, it will merge with another trail and eventually lead under Alameda Blvd, up a boat ramp and to the Alameda Bridge West Parking lot.
