Overview
Long uphill for a rewarding downhill blast.
Description
If you have the legs for it, this route is fantastic! Start in the limited parking below the Dam and start jamming up the dirt road.
Ice Box Canyon is on the right at mile marker one. Drop down and over the bridge to enjoy a ride along a stream as "good as it gets." The uphill out of Icebox is steep so crank on! Continue on up Wheeler Creek enjoying the twists and turns. The bridge with steps is on this section. I loved the beauty and construction of this feature.
Sardine Peak Trail starts at just under four miles with the official trail start at 6.6 miles. Uphill and beauty continue all the way to the peak and unless you love pain and punishment, the fun starts after the summit. Summit is an overstatement as the trail doesn't traverse the actual peak. You probably wont want to forge up on the quarter mile out-and-back that doesn't even reach the peak, as the peak is not easily reached bush-whacking off bike (I've done it and it wasn't worth it).
What is worth it is the MTB bomber downhill you'll totally love. Continue clockwise around the
Sardine Peak Trail until you get to the intersection you started the loop on marked
Upper Wheeler Creek Trail. Backtrack down until the top of the steep section out of Icebox Canyon. Take the right turn towards Art Nord trailhead. Little more uphill in this section before heading down into Art Nord day camping area.
At Art Nord, you just follow the Wheeler Creek Trail back down to the start.
History & Background
Lots of local history in the Wheeler Creek Canyon area. Read the plaque at Art Nord.
