Overview

Beautiful high country ride up to 12,000' in the alpine. The trail has some tough sections of riding but the views and payoff descent back to the car are well worth it.

Description

The route starts out above the Cumbres and Toltec train tracks, If timed correctly, you can watch the train pass by right below you. At mile three, you cross Wolf Creek right above a 30-foot waterfall. Mile six brings about the first views of the ridgeline and west off into the Chama Basin.

From this point until the turn-around point, the views don't disappoint with the ability to look off into both basins to the east and west. This trail tops out above 12,000 feet so the air is thin as you are near tree line the entire route.

After turning around, a long descent back to the car awaits you with half of it along the ridgeline. Start this ride early as afternoon storms in the summer can sneak up on you quick.

I rode the first 4.5-5 miles before turning around. Gorgeous views at the top where I found some wild strawberries and saw the train go by around 11.
