Road ends on private land.
Need to Know
The road can be rugged in parts and accessing it with anything other than a high clearance vehicle would be ill advised.
Description
This road branches off the the main Signal Peak Forest Service Road. The initial hundred yards or so includes a relatively steep climb up a rock slab before becoming proper doubletrack road that is often accented by potholes that can fill with water and mud following precipitation.
Running roughly parallel to Signal Peak Road, Lockney Road does not climb to the higher peaks but rather, allows one with a high clearance vehicle to some of the more remote trails in the Signal Peak Area without having to climb all the way up Signal Peak Road.
It can also be used to shuttle bikes to these trails if one uses a sufficiently high clearance vehicle. Additionally, Lockney Road can access the upper terminus of the
Woodhaul Wagon Road Trail #55.
A note of caution: Those looking to ride the upper part of
Woodhaul Wagon Road Trail #55 must know this is a completely different experience from the more sedate doubletrack that it becomes after entering the Fort Bayard/Arenas Valley area. The upper parts of
Woodhaul Wagon Road Trail #55 are very difficult to ride and exhibit a true backcountry nature.
While Lockney Road continues beyond the upper trailhead to
Woodhaul Wagon Road Trail #55, it quickly transitions into private land where several cabins are located, so take care not to trespass.
