Description
The western end of the trail starts in a neighborhood in Kirkwood, very close to I-44 and very convenient to downtown Kirkwood (shops and restaurants). It goes through numerous neighborhoods from Kirkwood, Oakland, and Crestwood. Then it passes by Grant's Farm where you can park a bike for free (there is a charge for cars to park) and US Grant Historical Site.
From there, it gets much more wooded and rural for several miles. The forest canopy starts to envelope the trail as you pass by numerous county parks with additional hiking and/or biking trails. Once it crosses I-55 and turns back to the northeast, you emerge from the forest and ride fairly parallel to I-55 for the remaining couple of miles.
A brand new dedicated bike/ped bridge crosses over the River des Peres and terminates the trail where it intersects the River des Peres Greenway, providing access to many more locations.
