Gate on Panhandle Road 202/FS Road 56 is closed most of the winter.

Overview

This route is frequently shuttled to skip the big climb up Panhandle Road 202/FS Road 56. To do so, drop a vehicle at the end of Taylor Ridge Trail #2025 and drive to the start of the Flint Rock Overlook Loop.

This route offers a little of everything; forest roads, ridgetop singletrack, old doubletrack and a screaming singletrack finish to your vehicle.

Need to Know

There is only room for 1-2 vehicles to park at the gate at the bottom of Taylor Ridge Trail #2025.

Description

Starting at the bottom of Taylor Ridge Trail #2025, ride down Lewis Cole Loop Rd and take a left on Stony Creek Hwy 91. Turn left on Mill Creek Road and start to climb. At the top, turn left onto Panhandle Road 202/FS Road 56, this turns to gravel at this point.

Shortly after it turns to gravel, there is a parking area that accesses Blue Hole Falls. You cant ride down to the falls but it is a short walk down.

On Panhandle Road 202/FS Road 56, settle in for a long climb up to the intersection with FS Rd 56A. Go through the gate here and do the Flint Rock Overlook Loop. Past the fire tower at the top Holston Mountain Trail #44 is unmarked. This is a fast, flowy ridgetop trail that drops down to Flint Gap.

From there, start down Flint Mill Trail #49 and stay on it to the overlook. Retrace you route back up to Flint Gap then turn right on Flint Mill Gap Road 4202, back up to Panhandle Road 202/FS Road 56. Climb the forest road for about a mile.

The start of Rye Patch Trail #2023 is an unmarked pull-off. Follow that through an old forest road gate. Follow Rye Patch for about a mile and a half. Bartee Branch Trail #2022 turns off to the left and the trail marker is on the right side of the trail and can be easily missed. At the bottom of Bartee, take a right on Taylor Ridge Trail #2025 and follow that down to your vehicle.
