Need to Know
Parking is at the Flying V Trailhead. No facilities are provided. Livestock may be in the area (some summers). They are usually moms and calves. Be considerate, this is their summer home and they keep the weeds down.
Description
Start this trail from from
Hog Pen. Trail is hand-dug, bermed and flowy. Trail winds its way down the draw through the pine forest. Early on, there are some nice views. But watch the trail, open areas quickly go through tight trees. But don't worry there is room.
As you get to the bottom, watch for rocks even as you look at the bluffs you are riding through. When you see the cabin, then you have to climb. That is the reason for the name. No matter which way you ride it, at some point you have the "Despair" of climbing out of the Hole.
Past the cabin (on the neighboring property) you'll pass the junction of
Jumbo. Stay to the right. The HOD will end at
Last Draw. Before you get there, you'll have rocky but rideable singletrack, the last downhill gives a good boost of speed into
Last Draw.
This trail can be sticky muddy when wet. It is also one of the last trails to lose its snow. HOD can be ridden either direction (of course more fun riding down).
