Description
This is a trail that can be ridden in either direction from clockwise to counterclockwise, no preference.
Heading counterclockwise, go south from the parking lot utilizing the pasture trail keeping in mind the tight turns you'll encounter - learn your slow turns. An "Open Space" trail called Butch & Sundance trail enters Outlaw Trail from the left. You now enter into the Outlaw Trail. This system is where the trail begins snaking up to the west face of Sundance Mountain. You'll come upon the junction of "Open Space" Sundance Trail, stay right.
Several climbing turns later, the overlooks give you a small respite to stop and enjoy the views provided. To the northwest, you'll see the Bearlodge Mountains and you can see other areas of interest from those locations.
You'll leave the overlooks and go into the trees, you'll climb a small hill and take a left into the tech section. The tech section is narrow with a steep sidehill and then a boulder and some rock action that will challenge your line selection. Old school stuff. You'll be just near the base of the scree fields of Rhyolitic rocks covered in ancient lichen. Look up on the cliffs - there is a hole in the wall of Sundance Mountain.
The trail then drops into the rock section across a hillside cut that opens into an area of wild roses and holly. The narrow singletrack then takes you through some tight juniper and trees and then opens to the boulders and "Cheese Rock."
The trail opens back up to the flow that allows you to rail turns. From this point, you are headed downhill and the trail has more than a few sweeping turns. You'll pass the "Open Spaces" opening of Sundance Trail to the left —keep going right — you'll ride into the 45-degree banked corner. It then flows through the woods and takes you to the border of BLM land and then switches west as you flow very smoothly through scrub oak and old pine. Which then switches back and forth through the tight trees down onto the rock gardens and then turns you down into the grasslands.
You then head southwest across the upper prairie to the Outlaw Draw. Go over the rollover and descend the draw maintaining enough speed to work the turns and to get any air on this new trail. It will then come out the bottom of a small rise and you'll see the parking area to the south. Too short? Too fun? Ride it the other way...
