Some of everything. Harder than Trout Mtn or La Garita Creek in technical diff. Great canyon views, waterfall, drops.

Need to Know

Deadfall and potential for new deadfall, much of it recently cleared but still more can be done, so bring a folding saw and work gloves. Occasional fading trail in the upper third, good drinking water.

Description

Ride as a clockwise loop starting anywhere between the 160 parking area and Shaw Lake. The road (FR430) is closed to motor vehicles and ebikes beyond Shaw Lake due to a washout. Approximately 60 minutes of climbing beyond Shaw Lake.

The trail starts on the right after passing over Lake Creek at a 90-degree righthand bend. Look for a round post and two USFS steel posts at the start, no signage.

Follow cairns with posts past old and new cut deadfall. The trail is all on the left [east] of the creek, don't be led astray by cow trails.

The upper two-thirds has had no traffic since the 2012 fire. The lower one-third is wider and smoother due to foot traffic coming up from 160.
