You may need a reservation for the parking lot on busy summer weekends from the Ruidoso Parks & Rec site.

The area is popular with walkers; probably not so much with the mountain bike crowd. But it is a good option for kids (or kids at heart) who are just starting out.

The short loop around Lake Alto itself is wide and extremely flat, probably ADA accessible, but expect to see a lot of walkers.

If you continue beyond the dam, you'll encounter slightly fewer people and a little bit of elevation change. There are a couple of wooden bridges that cross the creek to make shorter loops. The trail narrows a little at the far end with some steep but very short grades down into and up out of the creek.

Along the northern part of the trail, there are a couple places where the mostly crushed limestone trail has been rerouted onto singletrack with a few rocks and roots for a couple hundred feet.

If bringing young kids (just learning, balance bikes, kids/toddler trailer, etc) the ascent/descent from the dam down to the creek section are quite steep and loose gravel so be prepared to provide some assistance.
