Overview
Trail winds through pine forests, along rock outcrops and pockets of good vista views. The hand-cut trail utilizing elevation changes makes this an interesting fun loop. Some turns are bermed, some jumps and drops, lots of singletrack!
Description
This route starts from the trailhead. Head right after the gate. If you are up for it, ride the skinny. Under the powerline, stay to the right, once in the trees again, skip the first left, then either the next left for a goat trail or bomb down the draw carrying speed up the opposite side. The trail gets very tight and twisty for a bit as the goat trail continues.
The second half of
Never Sweat is climbs and flats. Trail is singletrack but wider. Past the junction with
Lasso, enjoy the bermed flow section. At the trail sign 22, the junction of
Never Sweat Breakneck,
Hog Pen, go straight. There is another easy skinny to try. Shortly, you reach the highest point of this route, it's all down hill from here (with some uphills).
Hog Pen is skinny singletrack and in spots out-sloped. It can be slick with pine needles and full of pinecones. At the junction of
Hole of Despair (HOD) stay right. This trail is not as tight but still need to pay attention. There are tight turns, tight lines through trees. After passing the rock outcrops, the trail is very tight, watch for loose rock on the trail. When you see the cabin on the right, be ready for a steep uphill climb.
After the hill levels out, the trail continues to be tight. Pick your line well on the steep downhill and bomb into
Last Draw. Nice singletrack through the pines continues. Pick your way through the rocks at the end of
Last Draw holding as much speed as you safely can and rip out in the field on
Calf. Follow this singletrack back to the trailhead and hit the skinny at the trailhead gate. And smile. Wasn't that sweet?
History & Background
The last portion of this route use to be a golf course (in the 1920s), now it is mature pine forest and pasture. If you look, you can see the remnants of the golf course.
