Description
Big climbs, fast flowy descents, and just technical enough to make it fun, this section of the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) is one of the best rides that Butte has to offer. The locals often joke that it is "Bozeman's favorite trail" due to how common it is for folks to make the journey over to ride it. The trail travels through an area that is almost completely forested, scattered with large granite boulders, and there are a few places where you can catch a view. Due to the trail's length, it is very common to park at Homestake and do an out-and-back to the summit, because continuing all the way down to Pipestone will guarantee at least an 18 mile day. There are some large and adventurous loops where you can incorporate this trail with trails from the Thompson Park Region, and it is also the final leg of the Butte 100 Mountain Bike Race held every year in July.
There are large parking lots at both ends of the trail, and there are toilets located at the main Homestake Parking Area on the north side of I-90.
