Dogs Off-leash
Description
Park at the bottom of Gopher Gulch just off of
BLM Road 5120. It's a short ride up a well-used road to the trail entrance. Pass through the gate (don't forget to close it) and you start your climb up this reclaimed doubletrack road. It's been out of use so long that there are areas where the doubletrack has faded away.
You'll pass through a sandy creek bed and a few rocky places before it ascends into the gulch. About 0.25 miles up you'll come to a split in the trail. This can be used to connect to the lower portion of the south fork of
Deadman's Loop. The trail for the majority of the way will mostly rise with a few small descents as you crisscross the dry creek bed. Due to infrequent use, there can be lots of tall grass that can slow you down.
When you reach the final part of the gulch, it turns into mostly singletrack with loam, small gravel and short grass until you reach a rocky outcrop that sends you over the top of the ridge. You can turn around here and ride back down or take the final drop down to the upper portion of
Nicomodes Gulch road. It is a very rocky descent to the road.
To make the ride up much more worth it, ride a little further to the top of
Nicomodes Gulch and you can enjoy a fun and fast ride down to
Deadman's Cave and
Deadman's Loop which ends at
BLM Road 5120 where you can ride back up to your parked car.
The total loop is just shy of 10 miles. The more the trail is ridden the more fun it will be so get out there!
